Socialization Training Activity Responsibility
AKC STAR Puppy Classes are a great foundation for having a well mannered dog for the rest of his life. They also help prepare your puppy for passing the AKC Canine Good Citizen Classes & Test as an adult! The curriculum includes tips & tricks for proper socialization with people/dogs/places, handling techniques, crate & potty training, barking, basic good manners, as well as basic COME, SIT, DOWN, STAY, LEAVE IT, DROP IT, and polite LEASH WALKING.
Puppies* 12 weeks and older with no history of aggression may attend the class. Once you have attended the Owner Orientation for the class (currently offered on Saturdays from 12:00-1:00pm), your puppy may start as soon as the next class (currently Saturdays from 9:00-10:00am and Sundays from 10:30-11:30am). Because the class is modular, you can start at any time, you get to choose which classes you attend, and you have 8 weeks from your start date to complete your package of 6 group sessions.
The modules of S.T.A.R. class repeat, and each behavior is covered in two modules, so if you miss something, you will get to practice it the next time it comes around. The second time we cover a given behavior with your dog, he will be able to move on to a higher level of difficulty (such as adding Stay to Sit/Down, or adding Leave it to Loose Leash Walking). Your puppy is eligible to take the AKC S.T.A.R. Test on his 6th session of class, and once he passes the test, he can move on to the next level class: the Canine Country Club. If your puppy needs more practice, you can purchase more STAR sessions a la carte, or you can take a break to practice at home and retest when you feel your puppy is ready.
