Control Unleashed is the next step after Building Blocks. This class works on a dozen ways of teaching LEAVE IT, adds Distance, Duration, and Distraction to the basics (COME, SIT, DOWN, STAY), and also teaches your dog to HEEL, STOP in motion, and GO TO MAT. Almost all of the training exercises are based on Leslie McDevitt’s book “Control Unleashed,” and the goal of the class is to teach your dog how to focus on you and work with you while off leash (in safe settings). All exercises are taught on a 15ft leash until the dog can be weaned off the leash. This class provides excellent preparation for dog sports such as agility, flyball, frisbee, or K9 freestyle, but it’s also excellent for “real life” trips to the park or the dog beach!

Once your dog has passed the AKC STAR Puppy test* and you have attended the Owner Orientation for the class (currently offered once per month on a Saturday from 12:15pm-1:15pm), you may start with your dog as soon as the next class (currently Tuesdays 7:45-8:45pm and Sundays 9:45-10:45am). Because the class is modular, the exercises change each Tuesday and repeat in order, so you can start at any time and you choose which classes you attend. We increase the difficulty of each behavior/exercise as your dog improves, so your dog can progress at his/her own rate. Dogs are never forced ahead or held back.

You can purchase classes in 2-, 4-, or 6-month packages, and once your dog can reliably work either dragging a leash or off leash, he/she can progress to Country Club OFF-LEASH and/or Collegiate Canines (AKC Canine Good Citizen) classes. Classes are held in Costa Mesa, 1 mile north of the Orange County Fairgrounds. Please call 714-696-1DOG (1364) or use the Contact form for more information or to sign up.

*All dogs must have taken at least 6 weeks of Building Blocks or an equivalent class elsewhere with instructor approval. All dogs must be friendly to both humans and dogs with no history of aggression, remain on leash unless specified by the instructor, and show proof of current Rabies, Distemper, and Parvo vaccinations OR titer tests. All dogs must also show a clean fecal exam for Ova & Parasites and Giardia ELISA from within 3 months of start date, and every 6 months thereafter.
