Building Blocks Basic Obedience classes are a great foundation for having a well-mannered dog for the rest of his life. This class meets requirements to be an AKC STAR Puppy Class. It is designed for dogs* 4 months and older with little-to-no reliability in obedience skills, and it is the first step in learning the skills to be an AKC Canine Good Citizen. The curriculum includes tips & tricks for proper socialization and polite greetings with people/dogs/places, body handling, barking, basic good manners, as well as FOCUS, COME, SIT, DOWN, STAY, LEAVE IT, DROP IT, WAIT, and polite LEASH WALKING. We also begin long line training as a foundation for off-leash training. When the mix of dogs is appropriate, we may have controlled off-leash play as well.
Once you have attended the Owner Orientation for the class (currently offered every other Saturday from 12:15pm-1:15pm), your may start with your dog as soon as the next class (currently Mondays 7:45pm-8:45pm. Saturdays from 11:00am-12:00pm, Sundays 9:45am-10:45am). Because the class is modular, you can start at any time and you get to choose which classes you attend. You can purchase classes in 2-, 4-, or 6-month packages, and once your dog passes the AKC STAR Puppy Test, you can continue onto Control Unleashed and/or Country Club classes.
The modules of the class repeat, and you will begin each class with review of what you and your puppy have already learned. If you need to skip a week, you can simply attend the module the next time it comes around. On your 6th session of class, any dog under 1 year of age is eligible to take the AKC S.T.A.R. Test, although you may wish to attend each module twice for best results. We increase the difficulty of a behavior (ex: adding STAY to SIT) for your dog as you repeat modules, so your dog can progress at his/her own rate.
Classes are held in Costa Mesa, 1 mile north of the Orange County Fairgrounds. Please call 714-696-1DOG (1364) or use the Contact form for more information or to sign up.
